[Diary Notes]
Tuesday ready for the ironing, but the sun is not
shining into the kitchen and
I cannot work in the
cold half-light, sitting outside
on the front porch
where the dappled grass
brings some comfort
This is the delicious time
between the iron outline
of reality where the
dishes are still in the sink and
the memory of a melody is hovering
in my mind,
I must hunt for it to make
it mine, follow the song
In my head before it is
gone, first I try God Defend
New Zealand, Hayley
Westenra, the meandering
melody line holds great
promise, but the quest must
go on: Pokarekare Ana a Traditional
New Zealand
Maori Love song 1914 on
Ukelele and I fall in love
with the song, followed by
New Zealander Folk Song
The Wellerman, Nici brought it to me and she and
I sang along, over and
over, delighted with our find
Charmed, I’m charmed with the
music of New Zealand,
I want to jump up and down to the rhythms pounding
in my ears, the warm feeling of the seafaring men’s
camaraderie suffusing the
atmosphere, then Black
Billy Tea, a
vision of a care-free New Zealander jauntily
marching to the song claiming
to be living in reality,
but blowing bubbles with
beautiful imagery that only
I can see, and I thank you, your music is so lovely!
