Die Krokodildans

Historiola De Musico Et Crocodile

Translation by J. Mark Sugars 1998

A musician was walking along the Nile with

violin & bow  - when a crocodile burst out of

the river below & showed his teeth opening

wide his jaw - attacking the musician - so to

swallow him whole, but the poor musician put

bow to violin & though pale with fear, swiftly

Started playing sweetly, he grew more brave

and as lovely sounds reached the monster's

ears danced for joy, dancing in circles on the

sand - across the shadows of pyramids and

palms, slapping the pyramids with his heavy

tail, not caring that the they were frail after

Centuries gathering dust; one of the pyramids

collapsed under his tail's a mighty blow and laid

the old Nile crocodile so low, thus the monument

buried the whole crocodile under thousands of

limestone blocks - the musician was so happy,

he had saved himself - so he went straight to

The nearest pub, & though he was rid of his

fearsome foe he was still shaking as wildly as

the pyramid did, he drank down brandy and

whisky, and when he asked for more wine,

they said there wasn't any - & our hero had

always had a terrible thirst - but his most

Recent adventure made this the worst thirst,

his story moved our hearts and in sympathy

for his plight, we resolved to keep drinking all

through the night!

IN MY 1940 FAK-BUNDEL is daar 'n lied "Die Krokodildans",

dom'nee Toet-ank-amen kon wulpsheid nooit verdra

LATIN:

Historiola De Musico Et Crocodile

1. Cum viola et arcu ad Nilum musicus
ibat, quum crocodilus erupit fluctibus.

2. Patefecit bestia fauces horrentes dentibus
voluitque saevis illum vorare rictibus.

3. Is tangit arcu chordas pavore pallidus
alacriter et dulce quandoque fortius.

4. Quum sonitus audisset tam suaves, subito
saltare coepit monstrum exsultans gaudio.

5. Saltavit iuxta ripam pedibusque circulos
pyramidum sub umbra fecit pulcherrimos.

6. Pyramidasque cauda feriebat bellua,
quae dudum vacillabant iam per tria saecula.

7. Et una est earum sub his valentibus
ingenti cum fragore collapsa ictibus.

8. Quae corruens oppressit Niliacum pecus;
sub mille nunc sepultum iacet lapidibus.

9. At ille, sic servatus feliciter, viam
confestim in tabernam direxit proximam,

10. Ut tantum post terrorem paulum quiesceret
et ossibus tremorem potans excuteret.

11. Quum unicum adesset Falerni dolium
exhausit ille totum fideliter cadum.

12. Nam sitis illi semper non parva fuerat
quae inter hunc terrorem adhuc increverat.

13. Horrore narrationis et nos tremiscimus;
quapropter, sicut ille bibamus fortius!
